To celebrate, the vegan offset of PUKE is hosting an amazing animal/human race.

P.E.T.A.A.N.J.W.C.D.D 50 Miler

(People for the Ethical Treatment of ALL Animals Not Just Whales Cats Dogs and Dolphins)

The good old dog 5K is, well, limiting. I would hate to discriminate against people that have pets that are not canines. Therefore, for all the ultra-animal-enthusiasts, this is a "bring your favorite animal" race. Word on the street is that Stephen Colbert is having a hard time choosing between his eagle and his bear. We heard that Karl Meltzer's been training in the backcountry with the Moose that chased him down at Bighorn. Who's knows, maybe Tony Krupicka will show up with one of those Mountain Lions that he's been chasing up and down Green Mountain?

This run will start from the Hawes Microwave tower. Runners must Bushwack approximtley 50 miles to the top of Thompson Peak. Use of trails is prohibited. Any runner or their animal caught on a trail will be immediately disqualified.

Rules:

1. No Muling. (however, mules are allowed).

2. You assume the risk involved running with a "wild" animal. If something fatal happens out on the course, well, that's what you get for really wanting to run with your pet tiger (too soon Siegfreid and Roy?).

3. Your animal must not hurt the other runners (or animals of other runners).

4. All waste must be removed from the course and carried to the finish line in our eco-freindly animal waste hemp sacks.

5. Runners with turtles and tortoises are given a 5-day head start.

6. Runners will be tied to their animals at the start with a 10-foot rope. In order to finish the race with "finisher" standing, runners must come to the finish line with the rope intact and their animal alive.

Awards

Biggest Load of Crap: The largest amount of animal waste picked up. This will be checked in at the end, and weighed, measured, and calculated by Arizona State's own Mathematics department (must be carried to the finish line in our eco-friendly hemp sack).

Most "wild"Shot: goes to the runner with the craziest animal picture.

Best scar: goes to the runner with the grossest animal bite.

Survival of the fittest: Goes to any runner that completes the entire race with an animal that has been deemed "dangerous" and comes back alive.

Run for the fun of running with your favorite animal, stay for the excellent Vegan Comfort food at the finish line.

We hope to see you out there!!

2011 PUKE Race Series

The following races are scheduled to be a part of the 2011 PUKE race series:

Chipotle Mile - Zach Gingerich. Gotta love this guy. You won't find his detailed training logs, garmin tracks, vertical miles, or calories consumed summarized in nice weekly blog posts. This guy is old school and about as scrappy as they come. He won't settle unless he's gunning down the AR at 100 miles. He'll probably retire at the end of this one, so he's got nothin' to lose baby. If you don't know what Zach looks like, check for the guy wearing knee length swim trunks.

2. Tony Krewpickaz. This guy is gonna run sub 13. Question is, will he be convinced to start with a flashlight this year?

3. Scott Jurek. Scott really deserves some respect after his 24 hour run last year. I really hope he pulls it off this weekend and comes within stabbing distance of Tony.

4. Arnstein. He says he should have started training the 3rd week of January. I sure hope that means he is on his way to a 200+ mpw taper going into race week. If he can handle a two day taper and learn to take it conservative the first 3 loops, he should be able to pull of a blazing fast time. I'm rooting for you to finish before dark Mike.

5. Heatmizer. I'd love to see a break out performance. He's got the loops down and wants his final Badwater qualifying 100 to put him over the edge. He'll run a conservative, strong and smart race. Look for sub 17 hours.

6. Hiroki. Man this guy is incredible. If he leaves his camera back in the hotel room and stashes his 12 pound Gregory sponsorship backpack at the turnaround point he should be flying around those loops.

7. Liza. She's got 14:57 tattooed on the insides of her eyelids. Can't think of a better way to shake up the ultra world than with a sub 15 hour rocky. Maybe that will help get at least ONE vote for ultrarunner of the year. Geez.

8. Connie. Machine.

Ok wish I was out there running, but honestly I can't stand the 20 hour drive over to Huntsville.

I am seriously interested in the possibility of doing a 50 mile organized trail run or race some time in the next few years. The trail is not yet complete, and I am attempting to get a hold of the person in charge to find its current status. From what I can tell, its supposed to be finished by 2011 or 2012.

I hope to scope out the route with fellow PUKErs some time within the year over the course of 3 days. It is called the UDAM, the Up and Down A Mountain ultra. It will be a loop course, consisting of laps up and down the steepest asphalt section of A mountain above ASU in Tempe, AZ. By my preliminary estimates, it will be 8 loops per mile, or 800 loops total. The elevation gain is projected at %@*# HUGE. Since there is food and medical aid every 1/8 mile, the RD will offer no sympathy for runners.

The preliminary logo is already complete. Let's get this $@&* on!

I like the concept of an Arizona Trail ultra race. The ideal format would be a point to point 100 miler from Camp Geronimo to Flagstaff. The race would be almost all in the pines except for a stretch above Lake Mary which would be through some juniper forests. The AZT through this section is a mix of beautiful single track and dirt roads. There are many highway crossings a few campgrounds that could serve as aid stations and the course doesn't have a terrible amount of elevation gain. Of course I would be in favor of a shorter race for feasibility purposes and would love to explore the possibilities of organizing a roving AZT ultra that would visit different parts of the trail each year, pending permits.

Nick is the Canal Man and has plenty of race ideas there to last the rest of the century, but has shown some depth with an idea for a Prescott Circle Trail 50 miler which looks to be about the sweetest thing EVER! We will have to get out there and scope out the course with Tomas'.

Nathan needs to submit some ideas ASAP. Just because you are Tillman Man now does not mean you can stop PUKEing.

My dream race would be an AZT non-stop 800 mile relay. Think about a group of friends who run non-stop the length of the state! I think I just ji$$ed in my pants.

I would also love to complete the Bloody Basin / Bloody Moon course some time soon. I do not care one bit about Hole to Hump.

Oh ya, shout out to Nick for conceiving the highest gains 100 miler in the country. He did so just in time to show up the drte race which claims so (even though Barkley beats it).

I want to see Nick and Nathan post some responses or other posts to this blog, because for now it is for our eyes only (FOEO).

PUKE Member Jamil Directs First Ultra

Jamil successfully presented the 6th annual Javelina Jundred this past weekend. 147 runners started the race and 72 finished the entire distance under the 30 hour cutoff. Several recent 100 mile winners will be in attendance for this tough 50 mile race across the Highline trail in Northern Arizona. Typically run in the west to east direction and boasting around 11,000 feet of elevation gain, this is known as one of the toughest 50 milers in the country. Runners this year will have it a bit easier since the course will be run in the opposite direction. This will reduce the overall gain by a couple of thousand feet.

Some of the top runners appearing on the entrants list include:
Karl Meltzer
Anton Krupicka
Kyle Skaggs
Ian Torrance
Josh Brimhall
Hal Koerner
David Goggins
James Bonnett

There will be a slew of Arizona runners present from around the state, some competing for the first time and others back for yet another day out on the Mogollon Rim! Be sure to check out www.zanegrey50.com for all of the entrants and more information on this great race!

What is P.U.K.E.?!?!?!

We are the Phoenix Ultrarunning Kids & Elders (P.U.K.E.) and we are a misfit bunch of ultrarunners who love to go the distance!
